My recent post of 28 Reasons Not to buy a mountain bike from Wall-Mart has been pretty popular. So, I thought maybe I would flip that coin and give my list of reasons why you should buy from a local bike shop. So lets get to it:
- It supports your local economy
- Personalized service
- Your bike will be properly assembled
- They will help you get a bike that fits your needs
- If your bike has a problem you know where to turn for help
- You can find people to ride with at the shop
- Shop employees will know where the good trails are
- Shop employees will know about the bike clubs in the area
- Many local shops will let you try out a bike before you buy one
- The wrenches at the local shop will install your accessories for you
- You can become a regular or "shop rat" then you can get the inside track on all sorts of stuff
- Bike shops are often a center or micro hub of culture in a community
- You can meet people and actually get to know them
- You may be able to find the spare parts for a tall bike for free
- You could meet pro cyclists or 2 kids from the UK biking from San Diego to DC
- They can show you how to properly maintain your bike (lube chain, repair a flat, adjust the brakes, etc.)
Do you have any reasons why you buy from a local bike shop? What is your bike shop of choice. For me it is ProVelo Cycle Sport. Cool guys, cool music, top notch customer service. Share your’s in the comments

I am a big fan of Cycle Extreme in Columbia, MO. They are so full of information. Everytime I am in there, they offer to help. It’s a friendly shop that I would recommend to anyone in the Columbia area!

Good tips. You definitely want to avoid WalMart when it comes to bike shopping!

The Hub in Webster Groves (St. Louis area) is my favorite place.
