This information was provided by Travis DeMoss. He is coordinating this event. If you would like to participate you can contact me via the contact page or stop by Pro-Velo Cycle Sport for more details. I will post more details as I get them on the site as well. I really wanted to get this info out there as soon as I could so people could start planning since this will be a four day ride.
There is a small but eager group of people who are interested in riding the Katy Trail from end to end. The date is set for Sept 15 thru the 18. For those who haven’t decided there is still plenty of time but I would like to get a firm number by the third week of August. I’d like to make the ride as comfortable as possible and take into consideration your thoughts and ideas. I have secured a SAG driver (SAG Man - I like to call him). He will be with us for the complete ride and be able to meet us at regular intervals for snacks, water, first aid and probably some really bad jokes. Other questions include:
1. Have you been training?
We welcome riders of all fitness levels, however, make sure you are able to go the distance. The trip calls for 4 days at about 60 miles per day. We want to make sure you are a part of the group and not struggling to keep up. That’s no fun for you or the group. While talking with riders that have responded, I think that the average pace will be between 10 and 12 MPH. That does not mean that you are not welcome - just a gauge for you to make up your mind.
***Training rides are scheduled for every Thursday at 5 pm at the trail head behind the fair grounds - we’ll look for you there.***
2. What will you do at the end of the day?
Because of the logistics, I do not plan on making transportation or motel arrangements for the group. Some people are thinking of camping, others plan to find a B&B and some will have family and friends that will put then up or drive them home. Have your plans ready for the end of each day. I’m sure there will be a large group staying over in Hermann and I’ll try to provide a list of accommodations there.
3. What will the SAG Man do?
We don’t know. I’ve never put one of these together and he has never SAGed before. I expect that he will meet us at agreed upon distances and provide snacks and fluids. Although handy - he is not a bike tech. If camping, your gear can go from one camp site to the next and there will be a bike rack on the truck should you need a ride to the day’s end destination.
4. How much will this cost?
There will be some obvious cost involved in the trip. We can buy snacks, Gatorade and other supplies ahead of time and I’d like to make sure the SAG Man doesn’t go out of pocket for gas. I’m sure there is more I’m missing and I have no idea of what to expect. If anyone has done this before and has an idea give me a call. When I have a better idea of cost I’ll get the number out and will expect for all fees to be in before your ride begins.
Projected Route:
Day 1 - Clinton to Pilot Grove - 62 miles
Day 2 - Pilot Grove to Hartsburg - 49 miles
Day 3 - Hartsburg to Hermann - 53 miles
Day 4 - Hermann to St. Charles - 61 miles
These are just some things I’ve been kicking around and would like your feedback.
