I have been putting some thought into what makes one town more bicycle friendly than another and what would need to happen to make a somewhat bike unfriendly town more bicycle friendly. I started writing this as a single post and it quickly got too long so I’m going to do this as a short series of posts that goes into a little more detail than what would have been covered in a single long post. So I’ll list the 5 keys to bicycle friendliness and then there will be a post devoted to each of the five keys in order.
These are the 4 keys to bicycle friendliness:
- Bicycle friendly towns have active engagement between city officials and the cycling community
- Bike friendly towns have places to park and lock bikes securely at convenient locations
- Bicycle friendly towns have signs on busy streets that remind motorists of bicycle traffic and to share the road.
- Bike friendly towns have bicycle lanes, trails, and paths that connect to places throughout the town that people frequent like libraries, stores, city offices, parks, etc.
