I have been putting some thought into what makes one town more bicycle friendly than another and what would need to happen to make a somewhat bike unfriendly town more bicycle friendly. I started writing this as a single post and it quickly got too long so I’m going to do this as a short series of posts that goes into a little more detail than what would have been covered in a single long post. So I’ll list the 5 keys to bicycle friendliness and then there will be a post devoted to each of the five keys in order.bike commuter

These are the 4 keys to bicycle friendliness:

  1. Bicycle friendly towns have active engagement between city officials and the cycling community
  2. Bike friendly towns have places to park and lock bikes securely at convenient locations
  3. Bicycle friendly towns have signs on busy streets that remind motorists of bicycle traffic and to share the road.
  4. Bike friendly towns have bicycle lanes, trails, and paths that connect to places throughout the town that people frequent like libraries, stores, city offices, parks, etc.
