in Bicycle Advocacy, Mountain Biking

Gateway Off-Road Cyclists Since I moved to Saint Louis back in June of this year, I haven’t really been as involved in the local cycling community as I had been in Sedalia.  The Pearl River Bicycle Club back in Sedalia is a great group of people doing really great things for the community.  I miss being a part of that.

Since moving I haven’t really found anyone to mountain bike with that was familiar with the good places to ride.  I’ve gone out on my own a few times but mountain biking alone is just not as much fun.  There’s no body to drink beer with.

I am also an advocate of supporting your local bicycle clubs and shops in anyway that you can.  So last week I decided to go to the November meeting of the Gateway Off-Road Cyclists or GORC.  GORC is a pretty good size club with roughly 180 members that build and maintain most of the Saint Louis area mountain bike trails.

GORC was founded in 1998 in St. Charles but the club has grown to cover the entire St. Louis area including both Missouri and Illinois trails.  GORC also has an active IMBA Mountain Bike Patrol group and several trail stewards that manage all of the trail building projects.

The membership dues are only $10.00 per year so I signed up.  I’m looking forward to getting my hands dirty building some trail, meeting some new people, and finding some really great places to ride in my new city.
