Now that the road season is pretty much done around here until spring and the Midwest Cyclocross RiderFat Tire Series is all but done, it is officially cyclocross season.  The USA Cycling 2007 National Cyclocross Championships are going to be held in Kansas City, Kansas this year at Wyandotte Couty Park. The racing will be held December 12-16.  Some of the best cyclocross racers in the country will be racing in this event.

Cyclocross is relatively unknown to a lot of bicycle enthusiasts.  Its not really mountain bike racing and it isn’t road racing.  It falls almost directly in the middle.

Cyclocross was started as a way for roadies to stay fit in the winter off season.  Cyclocross bikes usually have a bit of a stronger frame than a road bike but are not as beefy as a mountain bike. They accommodate slightly wider tires than a road bike that are tread-ed like a mountain bike.  They don’t have suspension and they must have drop bars like a road bike.  Cyclocross races are mostly off road with small barriers that riders typically jump off and carry their bikes over.

Cyclocross races are not typically cancelled due to weather.  The muddier, the wetter, the colder, the better.  Cyclocross races can become a real test of one resolve to finish a race.  On the other side though, everyone I know that has ever done one says it is the most fun they have had on a bicycle.

So check out the following cyclocross racing videos and click here to find a cyclocross race near you.
